The Rise Of The Micro-Wedding

Apr 12, 2024

Whether you are already working as a celebrant or hoping to become one, it’s good to remember there are all sorts of wedding ceremonies which embody different tastes. The traditional, the quirky, the modern, the boho, the informal to name just a few.  A new and popular trend is - the ‘micro’ wedding.

During and after Covid-19, small ceremonies became more popular (out of necessity) but this trend appears to have continued post-pandemic. In fact a global study in 2023 showed a third of couples were planning a smaller occasion.

At ICPC, we like to educate ourselves and our delegates on all types of ceremonies and help you to give your clients the best possible experience. Read on to discover more about micro weddings and what you can do to make them extra special.

What is a micro wedding?

A micro wedding is an intimate celebration for couples seeking a more personal and meaningful way to exchange vows. With guest lists typically limited to around 20 people or fewer, micro weddings offer a host of benefits that resonate with modern couples.

First and foremost, micro weddings allow couples to focus on what truly matters: their love for each other. Often, large weddings can include a lot of people the couple barely know, which can add cost, pressure and less intimacy. By keeping the guest list small, couples can spend more quality time with each guest, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. This intimate setting allows for a deeper connection between the couple and their loved ones, making the celebration all the more special.

Micro weddings also provide couples with greater flexibility and freedom when it comes to planning their special day. With fewer guests to accommodate (and less money to spend on them), couples can choose unique venues that may not be feasible for larger weddings, and reallocate budgets. Whether it’s an intimate garden ceremony, a cosy beachside affair, or a rustic barn wedding, micro weddings open up a world of possibilities for couples to tailor their celebration to reflect their personalities and preferences.

Green-minded couples might also prefer this type of wedding. Micro weddings are inherently more sustainable than traditional weddings, as they typically produce less waste and consume fewer resources. Eco-conscious couples could choose a micro wedding as part of a broader ‘natural’ theme.

Why micro weddings are special for celebrants

New celebrants just entering the industry can breathe a sigh of relief if a customer would like a micro wedding. This smaller setting can be less daunting for you as a new celebrant. You may not have to remember as many logistics, and a smaller crowd can give anyone with public speaking nerves a helping hand.

Micro weddings also allow you to really delve into the love of the couple, their family and friends. There are likely to be fewer complications or accidents, and a generally more streamlined ceremony.

Learning all types of weddings

As you grow as a celebrant, you will learn that no two ceremonies are the same. A micro wedding is a stark contrast to a larger event, and it’s important you are prepared for both. At ICPC, we not only teach all types of ceremonies, but the different niches and ceremonial differences within each category.
