Why Should I Learn Both Weddings and Funerals?

career celebrant training Feb 03, 2023

When you make the decision to train to become a civil celebrant, it is very likely you have a certain pathway in mind. Perhaps you see yourself being a wedding celebrant, or have been so moved by someone else’s funeral that your heart is in conducting meaningful funerals yourself. Perhaps you have something alternative in mind - after all, there’s no limit to the type of civil ceremony a celebrant can perform.

But how can you be sure that you are choosing the right pathway for you?

It seems sensible, therefore, to train with a provider that covers all types of ceremonies. That way you can have experience of writing and delivering a wide range of ceremonies before you decide which area you would prefer to focus on.

At The International College of Professional Celebrants, (ICPC), we provide training that covers weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies, vow renewals, adoption ceremonies and and all those wonderful moments of celebration and rites of passage.

By exploring how to structure, write and deliver all of these ceremonies, you will gain a better understanding of the professional role of a Celebrant and it will help you become a better more holistic Celebrant.

Not sure if celebrancy is for you? Take our quiz to discover more.

Why be a wedding celebrant?

Wedding celebrants have the privilege of being part of a love story. They meet couples, discover how they got to the point of marriage, and then support that couple through the ceremonial proceedings. It is a joyous, lively, often surprising role, filled with incredible stories, laughter, tears and celebration.

Why be a funeral celebrant?

Funeral celebrants are also part of a love story. But the tone of this event can be quite different, because it is the recognition of loss of love. You will work closely with grieving families who wish to acknowledge and celebrate the life of someone they loved, and your role in this is most important and memorable.

Why learn both and more?

Many people who come to the ICPC training have an idea in mind about their speciality. Many of those then change their minds half way through the training! This is exactly why ICPC covers all specialities in one package, rather than offering just one.

This instantly makes ICPC different from other providers, and also helps to explain why our training is considered 5* by all its delegates. Put simply - we cover more than most training providers because we want you to know as much as you can before creating your business.

One Can Back Up The Other

We hope that when you work as a celebrant, you get plenty of work and repeat customers. But what happens if you find yourself facing a month without a wedding booked? If you also train in funeral celebrancy, you can conduct funerals if you happen to hit a dry season with wedding bookings. And if you had only trained as a wedding celebrant, what would have happened to your income during ‘lockdown’? By training in all ceremonies you would have been able to continue working as a funeral celebrant. Knowing how to do both well, will give you more strings to your bow and an opportunity to branch out when necessary.

What Now?

We want to make sure you are ready for the journey into celebrancy which is why we have designed this quiz for you to take. Simply answer the questions and discover if this is going to be an appropriate and fulfilling career path.
