Beginning your journey into Celebrancy may seem complicated - after all, there are a number of training pathways you can take. But getting started really is easier than you think. If you’re considering becoming a Celebrant, this guide will help you navigate the early steps and set you up for success.

Reflect On Your ‘Why’

Before diving into the practical aspects of becoming a celebrant, it’s a good idea to reflect on your motivations. Why do you want to become a celebrant? Are you passionate about helping others? Do you find joy in bringing people together during significant moments in their lives? Do you want to transfer your skills into a career that brings you meaning and reward? Understanding your “why” will guide your decisions and keep you inspired when challenges arise. You can read our blog post here on the most common reasons people decide to pursue Celebrancy.

Do Your Research

Once you’ve clarified your motivations, it’s time to do your homework. Investigate the types of ceremonies you think you’d like to deliver, but also ensure you keep an open mind when doing so. Many people change their minds during training and ‘fall in love’ with ceremonies they never expected to. If you happen to be attending any ceremonies soon, this can be a good opportunity to observe Celebrancy in practice. You can also research training paths into Celebrancy and decide which path is best for you. If you prefer to learn face to face, then a residential course would benefit you. If you’d like to find all this information in one place, you can read our blog on all matters relating to Celebrancy and Celebrancy training. Or, book a call with us to ask your questions.

Consider Your Transferable Skills

Some people wonder if they have the skills to become a Celebrant. The good news is, it’s very likely you have quite a few! Have a think about your experience up until this date. Many skills from your current or previous professions can translate well into a Celebrant role.

Think about your experience in empathy, organisation, writing, public speaking, event planning, or listening and communicating. For instance, if you’ve worked in customer service, you likely have strong interpersonal skills that can help you connect with people on a personal level. If you have worked in teaching, you are likely to be practised in public speaking. If it helps, list out your work experience and pick out the key transferable skills from each. Doing this helps you to know what your strengths are, and where you might need to develop.

Make a Training Plan

Once you’ve decided that celebrancy is for you, it’s time to create a training plan. When would you like to begin? When is the best time for you to concentrate on learning without distractions? Which provider will you choose and how much work is required? And finally, have you got the allocated funds to invest in training? At ICPC, we encourage all of our delegates to ensure that now is the right time to train, and that you are thoroughly prepared for the journey ahead.
