It's Never Too Late For A Change of Direction

career celebrant training Apr 05, 2023

There are times in our lives when we consider changing direction - whether that is our career, personal life, or even our geographical location! Are you bored of the status quo, want to earn more money, enjoy more freedom, or seek a new challenge? Or perhaps something has happened in your life recently that has inspired you to want to become a better, more fulfilled person? Whatever it is, we salute you for wanting to do something new, and if that new thing is Civil Celebrancy, we can help.

Why we avoid change

Change can be scary, but change can be incredibly exciting too. You might ask, if something is exciting and clearly beneficial for us, why would we avoid making changes to achieve it? The answer lies in our evolution.

Why does it benefit you to understand this? Because by taking a step back away from your fear of change, you can see it more objectively and clearly. Then, you can make a decision based on what you truly want and need.

Evolution dictates that, as humans, we seek a state of balance. When the temperature is too hot, we cool ourselves down. When we feel thirsty, we drink water. When we are psychologically ‘comfy’ and ‘safe’ in our lives, jobs, relationships and routines, any sort of change is a threat to our psychological balance. We push against it, even if the change is good (such as going on a diet or quitting a bad habit).

Luckily, we have evolved to a point of having great introspectivity, and can reflect on our feelings and thoughts with more clarity than our primitive ancestors.

Here’s what you can do if your fear of change is holding you back.

Weigh The Pros and Cons

There’s a theory called Gleicher’s Formula - a way of looking at why we are resistant to change, and can help us to make more logical and rational decisions, rather than being dictated to by our fears.

This might sound a bit sciency - but it’ll help you decide the path to take.

The formula is:

D x V x F > R

Dissatisfaction x Vision x First Concrete Steps > Resistance

You multiply the dissatisfaction with the way things are now, with a positive vision of the future and the concrete steps to make the vision a reality. And this ‘value’ or ‘result’, needs to be greater than the things we are resistant about. Basically, the pros need to outweigh the cons in order to motivate change.

Taking the Leap

We welcome people from all walks of life, and all backgrounds, to train in Civil Celebrancy. The steps are easy, achievable and supported by the ICPC staff and wider membership community.

Step 1 is to check out our quiz, which determines whether or not this is a good path for you. Once completed, you’ll receive a call from one of our team to discuss your options. If you want to skip the quiz, you can call us directly on 03333404434.

Step 2 is to join our amazing Celebrant Training community and get to know other celebrants who have trained with us.

Step 3 is to select your training dates and decide if you want to do the Level 3 Certificate in Civil Celebrancy, or the Platinum Double diploma. The difference between the two is explained here

Step 4 is to receive all your resources, information and study materials, and to attend our training venue on your chosen dates.

Step 5 is to complete the 5 day residential course, where you will immerse yourself in the world of celebrancy and meet other people in training.

Step 6 is to complete your diploma or certificate online after the training course is finished. You can begin working as a Civil Celebrant before this qualification is complete.

And just like that - you’ve successfully stepped into Celebrancy! To illustrate this, we have included a video testimonial of one of our lovely delegates who talks about her life change into celebrancy.

We understand that disruption to your current lifestyle might feel instinctively uncomfortable. But remember this is just your brain’s way of trying to keep you safe and secure - and actually, when you think about it logically, what you are doing is making positive life changes that are only going to benefit you in the long run.

We are happy to help, and welcome your questions and comments in our Facebook group, or on the telephone.
