How to use other people's success to motivate us

celebrant training Jan 12, 2024

We have all known the struggle of seeing someone else thrive while we feel like we are falling behind. It’s a difficult feeling to manage, and can make us want to give up altogether. But the wonderful thing about being a Celebrant is that we help each other to grow, and create an atmosphere of support so that when others do well, we can learn from them and celebrate them, rather than feel put off.

If you are in a position where you don’t feel you are as successful as you could be, looking at those who are doing well in their business is a great way to learn and grow.

Peers, Not Competition

At ICPC, we believe that other celebrants are your peers, not your competition, and invite you to watch this fantastic video of our trainer Maxine talking more about this ethos. We believe in collaborative working, which means staying connected, building each other up, and celebrating each others’ successes. It means rejecting older, tired principles of ‘dog eat dog’ and instead enjoying friendly, encouraging and helpful interactions.

By adopting this mindset, you can begin to celebrate and encourage other celebrants, rather than trying to compete with them. And in return, they will do the same for you. What Measures Success?

The success of a celebrancy business isn’t just one factor but can be a collection of many. It can also be a very individual and subjective matter.

Success could be:

  • Feeling emotionally and mentally fulfilled in the role
  • Having an excellent reputation on the marketplace, which is reflected in online reviews and testimonials
  • Having enough bookings to work as frequently as suits you and your schedule, and never feeling like you are falling short on clients.
  • Feeling financially satisfied by Celebrancy
  • Getting customers through word of mouth recommendations and returning clients
  • Clients expressing gratitude to you
  • Having achieved a particular qualification or achieved a milestone

And there are many other ways to measure success too!

What’s important to remember is that what you deem success in your own business might not be how others see success in theirs.

Losing Momentum: A Downward Spiral

If you have become disheartened by seeing others succeed, you might begin to lose momentum. This means you spend less time investing in your business, less time marketing yourself and feel discouraged to continue. It’s important to try and push back on this temptation and remember that, while there’s no magic formula, there are steps you can take to become successful and they’re simpler than you think.

Using Others’ Success To Motivate Us

To avoid the downward spiral, you can look at what other Celebrants are doing. When a Celebrant is doing well, there could be some great lessons to be learned from them. You could:

  • Reach out to them to praise them for their success and ask them directly how they are achieving their goals and the methodology they use.
  • Share your thoughts with them and ask them for words of encouragement and motivation
  • Look at and analyse their website and social media, what are they doing differently to you? What can you learn from them?
  • Have they taken a qualification that you haven’t? Perhaps you could embark on some further learning?
  • Ask them to mentor you or look directly at your business, website and processes to give you individual tips

Remember, a successful celebrant was once where you are now - and they took certain steps to achieve success which you can also take. Learning from each other is part of being a celebrant.
