How Your Teaching Skills Are Transferable Into Celebrancy

May 28, 2024

At ICPC, we see a lot of delegates who have come from teaching and education backgrounds. There is a distinctive reason for this - many of the skills you learned in education and teaching can be transferred into celebrancy. We want to explore this more with you. In this article you’ll learn more about what celebrancy entails, and how your role as a teacher or head teacher, can complement many of the skills and attributes required for a celebrancy career. When you began teaching, you did so because of your love of children and education; when you become a Celebrant, everything you do is about Love. The love of the deceased, the love for a new baby or family member, the love of a couple…it’s all about Love.

Skills Shared Between Teaching and Celebrancy

We know that transitioning from one career to another can feel frightening. The good news is, if you are a teacher, you already have some of the skills and traits needed for celebrancy.

While the two professions might seem quite separate, they share common threads that can make the transition from one to the other smoother and more rewarding. Let’s explore how the skills acquired as a teacher can seamlessly transfer into a fulfilling career as a celebrant.

First and foremost, effective communication lies at the heart of both teaching and celebrancy. As a teacher, you’ve honed the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and engaging manner, adapting your communication style to suit diverse audiences. Similarly, as a celebrant, you’ll be tasked with articulating yourself to customers and ceremonial guests, guiding individuals and families through important life events such as weddings, funerals, and naming ceremonies. You might be more confident than most in tailoring your message to resonate with different groups so that you can create more meaningful and memorable ceremonies. You will also have developed communication for conflict resolution which, interestingly, also transfers into the role of the celebrant.

Empathy is another essential trait that transcends both professions. As a teacher, you’ve developed empathy with the emotions and experiences of your students and parents alike, which is key to a supportive and inclusive learning environment. This ability to empathise with others will serve you well as a celebrant, as you will connect with families during times of joy, grief, and transition.

You also are likely to have advanced listening skills. Your capacity to listen actively, offer comfort, and provide reassurance will help you craft ceremonies that reflect the personal values and beliefs of your clients.

Transferable Practical Skills

Good organisational skills are paramount in both teaching and celebrancy. As a teacher, you are well versed in planning and executing lessons, managing schedules, and coordinating various activities to ensure an effective learning environment. Similarly, as a celebrant, you’ll need to juggle multiple responsibilities, from liaising with clients and vendors to overseeing the logistical details of ceremonies. Your ability to stay organised and methodical under pressure will be key as a celebrant.

As a teacher, you will have also learned to be adaptable and flexible, knowing that change is something that can happen without any notice. As a celebrant, you’ll encounter clients from different cultural backgrounds and with different personal preferences, meaning you must adapt and be flexible to their needs. You will need to embrace change and accommodate diverse perspectives to create inclusive and meaningful ceremonies that resonate with all of your clients and their families.

The Creative Flair

Teaching is a creative role. And so is celebrancy. As a teacher, you’ve found techniques and resources to engage your students creatively, helping them to develop a love of learning and discovery. Similarly, as a celebrant, you’ll have the opportunity to craft unique and personalised ceremonies that reflect the individuality and essence of your customers. Your creative flair will enable you to design ceremonies that are not only memorable but also reflective of the personalities and preferences of your clients.
